“An exciting way to gain a through knowledge of Chumash and Rashi”
What we cover:
People, places, events and lessons in Tanach.
How it's done:
Questions and challenges on a wide variety of topics are organized onto index-cards.
Students choose tasks and work at their own pace throughout the year.
The teacher is present to suggest sources for research. Upon completion, most Parshios, Rashi's and many Meforshim have been reviewed in great detail. It's much more effective than “gemer” exams.
“A concept takes on a whole new dimension when you get to see it from different angles”
What we cover:
Selected Maamarim from each of the seven Rebbeim. For example, we start with a Yom Tov Shel Rosh Hashanah of the Alter Rebbe and then continue with Yom Tov Shel Rosh Hashanah from the Rebbe Rashab and follow up with a maamar of the Rebbe on the same dibur hamaschil.
How it's done:
The students prepare the Maamar in chavrusah and are free to consult the teacher as they wish. They then deepen their understanding in the shiur that follows.
“I never thought I'd have time to study the entire Tanya and definitely not in just one year”
What we cover:
The complete Sefer HaTanya
How it's done:
Every morning we have a shiur Tanya on the daily chitas, ask questions and discuss the inyonim until we understand them. Many related topics are clarified to enrich the understanding of the specific inyon being learned.
Every day, one of the students prepares and presents the Hayom Yom of the day, and the daily mitzvos of the Rambam are learned in class.
“How can you ‘Live with the times' without understanding it?”
What we cover:
Specific topics from Parshas HaShavua
How it's done:
The teacher presents a topic and the students learn a number of mefarshim, analize the differences of opinion and how they enhance the understanding of the inyon.
This enables questions to be clarified according to the approach of the various Meforshim.
“Understanding the background of Halacha takes the guesswork out of remembering what to do”
What we cover:
Specific halachos as they appear in Chumash, Mishnayos, Gemara, Tur and other Rishonim, Shulchan Aruch, The Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch and Kitzur Shulchan Aruch.
How it's done:
The students receive copies of the above material and learn it in chavrusah. The teacher is present to assist at any point and gives a shiur on the Halacha at the end. The shiur is a chance for the girls to go over all that they have learned and figure out what the actual Halacha is.
“Not just Historia. Put all your knowledge into a workable framework.”
What we cover:
From Adam until Today.
How it's done:
Each student receives a Historical Atlas and locates the Jewish centers of every period on the maps. This crystallizes what each student has learned and guides the research to clarify fine-points and to read up on unfamiliar times and events.
How it's done:
This class was requested by the students. On Shabbos afternoons, Rabbi Liberow learns the text, translating, explaining, and enriching the learning with stories and examples.
Every Friday 2-3 girls go to give shabbos candles, two challos and a Chabad newsletter to all the Jewish patients in the hospital and the Jewish Moshav Ze.
On Sunday we go to the flea market, park and other well-populated areas and give out Sheva Mitzvos B‘nai Noach cards.
There are also opportunities to visit people at home. Most of them speak basic English and many speak Yiddish.
“Sichos take a whole new dimension when you have a foundation to base them on”
What we cover:
One Sicha every week, usually a Rashi Sicha, on Parshas HaShavua
How it's done:
Every Monday the specific Sicha is announced and students receive copies of the main sources in Nigleh. They prepare the Sicha and the Mareh Mekomos (sources) in chavrusah. On Thursday night, each student summarizes a section of the Sicha and a discussion follows.
What we cover:
Different techniques that can be used in decorating wood, canvas and other surfaces.
How it's done:
Once a week we go to an art studio that has classrooms, teachers and supplies. Using different mediums we learn how to create a number of effects, such as aging, leather, blending and others.
“Want to learn how to create something like this?”
What we cover:
CorelDraw, Photoshop, Dreamweaver (web publishing), and more.
How it's done:
Every week we have a 3-hour class with an English-speaking professor. The classes are given through Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), a top-notch university. The university gives a certificate on the completion of each course.
