Tidbits about our sem, the city and how to get around.

  1. Question : Where is Porto Alegre, Brazil?
Porto Alegre is in the southern tip of Brazil, which is the largest country in South America.

  2. Question : What language is spoken in Brazil?
    Portuguese.

  3. Question : What is the currency in Brazil?
The currency here is Real. Currently it's 2.24 Real for one dollar, but it changes every day.

  4. Question : What is the weather like?
Since Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are opposite those in northern hemisphere. The school year starts in September, which is springtime. Summer comes in December and extends to March and by June winter has set in.

  5. Question : How many Jews are there in Brazil? How big is the Chabad/Frum community?
There are 150,000 Jews in Brazil, of which 10,000 live in Porto Alegre. Most are assimilated. Rabbi and Mrs. Liberow are the shluchim in Porto Alegre and the frum community is all Chabad.

  6. Question : What kosher products can you get in Porto Alegre?
There is one kosher store in Porto Alegre called Lechaim. A frum woman from the community cooks for the seminary and bakes bread and rolls. They get fresh milk from a nearby farm and fresh cheese from Rio de Janeiro. The meat is from Belem, Para, which is in northern Brazil where the local shliach is the shochet. Everything has a very good hashgacha. If you have any questions about it or about the availability of any particular food, feel free to contact us.

  7. Question : Who are the directors and staff of the seminary?
Rabbi and Mrs. Liberow are the directors and main teachers. Different teachers are brought to Porto Alegre and on the trips we have classes with different people.

  8. Question : What trips does the seminary take?
The seminary goes on trips around Brazil and South America. When we visit these different places, we have lectures with the local shluchim and teachers. For more information about our trips, go to the Activities and Trips page.
